Migration Information Centre (MIC) organised initial meeting for cultural mediators. Cultural mediators represent migrant communities in Slovakia and co-operate with the MIC to organise various types of intercultural events. The aim of the meeting was to launch the activities of the network of cultural mediators for the year 2010. Cultural mediators are foreign nationals or Slovak citizens who know the community well and are interested to work for its benefit either informally or as representatives of migrant associations. Cultural mediators co-operate with the MIC especially through the so-called “intercultural meetings/events” with various sporting, social or information programme and content. Intercultural events are organised by cultural mediators with the financial support of the MIC and serve various purposes: they offer space to get to know people from different cultural backgrounds, bring important information about various aspects of living in Slovakia and create opportunity for socialising and exchange of experience. Between 2006 and 2009 cultural mediators organised 36 such events at which more than 1 500 people participated. The workshop was attended by cultural mediators for African, Afghan, Iraqi, Ukrainian, Cuban communities, the community of Muslims living in Slovakia. Cultural mediators discussed their plans for the year 2010 as well as their suggestions for further services of the MIC. Information about planned or prepared intercultural events will be published on this website www.mic.iom.sk.
