Bratislava, April 25, 2006 - The office of International organization for Migration (IOM) in Slovakia has opened its Migration Information Centre in the capital Bratislava. It is the first centre of its kind in Slovakia and it will provide advice and help to foreigners who have settled or wish to settle and work in the country.
In the past years Slovakia has become a target country of a growing number of foreigners, who come here seeking work or better living conditions. At the present, there are around 26 thousand foreigners with a legal residence in Slovakia. As concluded in the study of the migrants' needs, which was conducted by the Department of Social and Biological Communication of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the most serious problems for foreigners in Slovakia include the communication with the authorities when applying for the necessary documents, work permits, business licences, or the communication with the local population in the process of integration into the society which they want to benefit. Therefore, it is important, that Slovakia creates an effective system for the social and labour integration of the migrants.
"Foreigners, who want to become a part of the labour market and social life in Slovakia, are dependent on the information. These, however, are not centralized and has to be searched for at various offices and institutions, which presents a challenge for any Slovak citizen, not least a foreigner," says the director of the Slovak Office of IOM, Ms. Zuzana Vatráľová. "IOM's Migration Information Centre offers information and advice in the main areas such as residence, housing, work, education, social issues or healthcare. Our target group are foreigners with legal residence in Slovakia."
