Bratislava, October 4, 2006 - Since this October, IOM's Migration Information Centre in Slovakia financially supports foreigners who want to take educational and re-qualification courses. The Centre also organizes a series of discussion meetings with the public, about the life of migrants in Slovakia. Re-qualification support

"Our centre offers help with education and re-qualification to foreigners, who have settled in Slovakia. After successful completion of their course, they have better chances to find their place in the Slovak labour market," says the director of the Slovak Office of IOM, Ms. Zuzana Vatráľová.

"All foreigners with legal residence status in Slovakia can apply for a financial support. Each application is considered individually, with the view of the needs of that particular person. They can get financial help of up to 548 EUR," adds Ms. Vatráľová.

Discussion meetings

In October, MIC has started a series of discussion meetings with the Slovak public. The goal is to help the migrants' integration into the society by informing the wide public about the life of foreigners in Slovakia.

The topics for these discussions were drawn from the six months' experience of the Migration Information Centre and from the study of the Department of Social and Biological Communication of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Some of them: Multicultural training of the primary schools Ethics teachers; Who are the migrants among us? and Global education. The discussions will be organized in four Slovak towns - Zvolen, Prešov, Fiľakovo and Košice - during October and November.

In the first six months of its existence, the IOM's Migration Information Centre offered information and assistance to about a hundred clients. MIC helps foreigners with the advice in the main areas of life, such as residence, housing, work, education, healthcare, etc. The most requested information are how to gain a Slovak citizenship, obtain a work permit, what does one need to marry a Slovak citizen and more information about the healthcare in Slovakia
