Permanent residence permit for the purpose of family reunion in Slovakia may be granted either as a so-called first permit or as a so-called further permit.
The first permanent residence permit may be granted to a foreign national who is:
- a spouse of a Slovak citizen with permanent residence in the SR or a dependent direct-line relative of a Slovak citizen with permanent residence in the SR
- a single child aged less than 18 yrs under the custody of a foreign national, who is a spouse of a Slovak citizen with permanent residence in the SR
- a single child younger than 18 yrs of age, whose parent is a foreign national with permanent residence permit or a single child younger than 18 yrs of age under the custody of a foreign national with permanent residence permit
- a dependent child older than 18 yrs of age whose parent is a foreign national with permanent residence permit
A child younger than 18 yrs of age, under the custody of one of his/her parents and who is an applicant for the permanent residence permit for the purpose of family reunion, can be granted permanent residence permit only if a written consent has been given also by the other parent who has not been granted the custody of this child but is entitled to meet the child.
The first permit is granted for a period of 5 years, the further permit for an unlimited period of time.
The further permanent residence permit for the purpose of a family reunion shall be granted to a foreign national:
- who has been granted the first permit (and after 5 years)
- who is a spouse of a foreign national with permanent residence permit and who has had temporary residence for at least 5 years prior to submitting an application for the further permit
- who is a single parent of a foreign national with permanent residence dependent on care of the foreign national and who has had temporary residence for at least 5 years prior to submitting an application for the further permit
- who is a family relative (regarding a single child younger than 18 zrs of age, dependent child older than 18 yrs of age and dependent single parent) of a foreign national with temporary residence permit for the purpose of business or employment and who has had temporary residence for at least 5 years prior to submitting an application for the further permit
- who is a child younger than 18 yrs of age whose parent is a foreign national who has been granted the further permit.
Documents needed as a proof for the purpose of family reunion:
In case of a foreign national who is married to a Slovak citizen with permanent residence in SR:
- Slovak marriage certificate
- Proof of permanent residence of the Slovak citizen, who married a foreign national (identification card)
Notice: If the couple married outside the territory of the Slovak Republic, it is necessary to submit to the Alien Police Department a Slovak marriage certificate issued by the Special Registry Office in Bratislava. An official translation of your foreign marriage ceritficate is not sufficient. Please note that the Special Registry Office in Bratislava does not accept applications and you must apply for issuance of the Slovak marriage certificate at the competent Registry Office.
In case of a single child younger than 18 yrs of age under the custody of a foreign national, who is a spouse of a Slovak citizen with permanent residence in the SR (e.g. children from the first marriage):
- Birth certificate of the child (official translation)
- Written affirmation of a parent that this child is not married
- Slovak marriage certificate
- Proof of permanent residence of the Slovak citizen, who married a foreign national (identification card)
- Copy of the relevant decision issued by a competent foreign authority, according to which the child has been placed into the custody of a foreign national who is a spouse of a Slovak citizen (official translation)
- Written consent of the second parent of the child who, according to the decision mentioned above, also has the ight to meet the child

Warning:
The Police Authority will reject the application for permanent residence or will cancel an already issued residence permit, if there is reasonable doubt that the foreign national married a Slovak citizen with the intention to obtain the residence or if the spouses do not lead a common family life (i.e. marriage of convenience) or in case of administrative expulsion.
The Alien Police Department will cancel the permanent residence permit, if the marriage terminates sooner than 5 years following the issue of the first permit for permanent residence.
