A permanent residence permit is first granted for the period of five years and after this time the Police Authority can grant, based on an application of the foreigner, so called "further permit" which is valid for an unlimited period of time.
The "further permit" can be granted to a foreign national:
  • who has been granted the first permit
  • who has been granted a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment or business or if he/she is a family member of such foreign national, or if he/she is a spouse of a foreign national who has a permanent residence permit (or a single parent depending on his care)
  • if the applicant has had an uninterrupted temporary residence for at least 5 years prior to submitting the application
  • whose further permit has expired according to § 41 letter g) or has been cancelled according to § 42 article 1 letter g) of the Act on Residence of Foreign Nationals
  • who is a minor child of a foreign national with further permit
The foreign national submits an application for further permit in person on an official form to the Police Authority in Slovakia, at the latest on the last day of validity of the first permit. The application form is available for download on the webpage of the Bureau of Border and Alien Police.

The Police Department shall decide  within 90 days of submitting the application.

Accompanying documents

With the application for the further permit the foreigner will enclose the following documents (not older than 90 days) proving:
  • valid travel document and two identical photographs in passport format (3 x 3.5 cm). If the applicant does not submit the passport, the Police authority will not accept his/her application
