Document proving the purpose of the residence in SR (business, employment, study, special activities, family reunion, fulfilment of the official duties by the civilian units of the armed forces) – for example a business license; a work permit, a confirmation about performing special activities issued by an educational institution, an art agency or a sports organization; a marriage certificate or a birth certificate of the child.

Criminal Record

The clean criminal record of a foreign national is proven by submitting an extract from the criminal registry of the Slovak Republic and by an extract from the criminal registry in the country of which the applicant is a citizen, as well as the extract from criminal registry from the state/-s, where the applicant has resided within past 3 years. Proving clear criminal record is not compulsory for a foreigner who applies for the temporary residence permit for the purpose of special activities and for the purpose of fulfilment of the official duties by the civilian units of the armed forces. Neither it is compulsory when applying for a change of a purpose of the residence, nor for the foreigners with a long-term residence in the EU/EEC, nor for the children younger than 14 years.

Finances

The stay of the applicant must be financially covered at least in the amount of a statutory "monthly life minimum" (currently amounts to EUR 185.38/month), at least for a period of one year. The applicant applying for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of business must show financial resources amounting to 5 x statutory minimum salary (currently EUR 307.70/month) per each month of residence. The financial coverage can be proved either by submitting a bank account statement or by submitting a confirmation given by the employer about the applicant's monthly salary.

Accommodation

If the applicant owns a property in Slovakia, the accommodation can be proved by the property title deed. If the applicant intends to stay in a rented flat or a house, he/she submits a lease contract accompanied by the property title deed of the landlord. If the applicant plans to stay in a hotel or hostel, he will submit a written confirmation given by the accommodation facility. If the applicant wishes to stay at his friends' or family, he shall submit their written affirmation (verified and stamped by a Slovak public notary) accompanied by their property deed title.

A detailed list of documents required in order to prove the purpose of the residence in Slovakia is available in the article "How can I prove the purpose of my temporary residence".

All documents submitted with the application must not be older than 90 days. Each foreign document must be sufficiently authenticated (either by an apostillation or a consular super legalization) and must be translated into Slovak by an official translator certified by the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic.

Authentication of documents

All documents issued by the authority of foreign state must be sufficiently authenticated as follows: A) HIGHER AUTHENTICATION OF DOCUMENTS – CONSULAR SUPERLEGALIZATION is required if a country where the document was issued neither is a state party to the Hague Convention on Apostille (see below) nor has it signed a bilateral agreement with Slovakia on legal assistance. Document issued in such a country must be authenticated first by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country which issued the document and after that by the Slovak diplomatic mission (embassy, consulate) in the country mentioned.

B) APOSTILLATION – is a simpler way of authentication of the foreign documents. The document is sufficiently authenticated and can be used for official purposes in Slovakia when an Apostille is attached to it by the competent authority in the country where the documents was issued. This kind of authentication is recognized by the state parties to The Hague Convention from 1961 about abolishing the requirement for the higher authentication of the documents (Hague Convention on Apostille). Governmental bodies competent to issue the Apostille are listed here. Apostille is a paper certificate, 9 x 9 cm in size containing the text "APOSTILLE (Convention de La Haye du 5 octobre 1961)" and is attached to the authenticated document.

C) If the document was issued by a state which signed a bilateral agreement on legal assistance with SR, it can be translated into Slovak language without needing a prior authentication.

You can apply for an extract of the Criminal registry of SR at every Public Prosecutor's Office or at a municipal registry office in Slovakia. When applying at the Public Prosecutor's Office, the fee of EUR 3 (duty stamp) is required for each extract. If you apply at a municipal registry office you must buy a EUR 3 duty stamp for the extract and pay further EUR 1.50 for an official verification of your personal data in the application form. You can obtain the extract while you wait at the offices listed here.

If you are abroad you can apply for an extract from the Criminal Registry at any Slovak diplomatic mission which will arrange the issue and the delivery of the document.
