Primary schools in Slovakia Print
The primary school education in Slovakia lasts for 9 years. The primary schools are divided into two levels: First level (pre-school class through the 4th grade) and the second level (5th through the 9th grade). In some schools, the secondary level is connected with the secondary grammar school.

There are both state and private primary schools. Free of charge primary education is guaranteed for both Slovak and foreign nationals, but only at state primary schools. However, parents need to cover the meal expenses, voluntary donation for the primary school and a range of school supplies for the child (a schoolbag, pens, pencils, rulers, etc.).

Social scholarships and support

Scholarships may be granted not only to children whose parents receive the benefit in material need, but also to children whose parents work. The condition that must be met in both cases is that the family income is lower than the subsistence minimum.
