How can I obtain a permanent residence permit in Slovakia?
Permanent residence permits are divided into two categories, the so-called "first permit" and "further permit". They may be granted for instance on family-related grounds, on grounds of uninterrupted residence in Slovakia for a specific period of time etc. For more information in this regard, see the section Residence.

If you meet the legal requirements and if you apply for permanent residence permit for the first time or if your residence permit expired and you have not applied for the furhter permit in time, you may be granted the first permanent residence permit.

The application for the first permit shall be submitted in person either at a Slovak diplomatic mission abroad or at the competent Foreign Police Department in Slovakia on an official application form, along with all required documents (see the section Residence).

The first permit is granted for a period of 5 years. The Foreign Police Department issues a decision within 90 days from submission of the application, in particularly complicated cases this period may be extended up to 180 days.

Application for the further permanent residence permit shall be submitted in person at the competent Foreign Police Department in Slovakia, no later than on the expiration date of the first permanent residence permit or eventually a temporary residence permit. The first permanent residence permit or a temporary residence permit remains valid in the territory of Slovakia until the Foreign Police Department issues a decision about  the application.

Further permit is granted for an indefinite time period and a decision about the application shall be issued within 90 days from submission of the application.
