How can I obtain a permanent residence permit in Slovakia?
Permanent residence permit is divided into two caterogies: so-called "First Permit" and so-called "Additional Permit". They may be granted for example on family-related grounds, on grounds of uninterrupted residence in Slovakia for a specific period of time etc. To find out more, please see the section entitled "Residence".

If you have met the legal requirements and if you are applying for a permanent residence permit for the first time or if your residence permit expired and you have not applied for the additional permit in time, you will be granted the first permit.

The application shall be submitted in person either at a Slovak diplomatic mission abroad or at the Alien Police Department in Slovakia on an official application form with additional documents attached as stipulated by Section 37 of Act No 48/2002 Coll. on Residence of Foreign Nationals (See section Residence).

The first permit is granted for a period of 5 years. The police department issues a decision about the application within 90 days after your submitting the application, and in particularly complicated cases, this period may be extended to 180 days.

Application for the "Additional Permit" shall be submitted in person at Alien Police Department in Slovakia no later than on the expiration date of the first permit or, possibly, other type of residence permit (temporary residence). Temporary residence comes into consideration only if the law determines that after a certain period of a continuous temporary residence the foreigner may apply straight away for the Further permit without having already obtained the First permit.

The Alien Police Department shall issue a decision about the application within 90 days after your submitting the application. If you fullfill the legal requirements for applying for the further permit and you have submitted the application form on time, your First permit for permanent residence or temporary residence permit remains valid until you obtain a decision about your new application. Further permit is issued for an indefinite time period.
