General work permits can be issued for up to 2 years and work permits for seasonal workers for up to 6 months. There must be at least a six-month period between two seasonal work permits for one foreign national.

A single work permit is issued always for the specific job and the place of work with the specified company. If you work in Slovakia based on a work permit and you want to change your employer, you will have to apply for a new work permit.

Who issues work permits

Work permits are issued by the Labour Office locally competent according to your future place of work. The office shall consider your application for the work permit within 30 days.

Application for a work permit

You can apply at the locally competent Labour Office on an official application form, which must be submitted in two copies. The application form is available for download here. You can also get the application form at every Labour Office.

Do not forget to prepare a document proving your education and attach it to the application form. Detailed list of all required attachments can be found in the article Application for a work permit and supporting documents.

It is not necessary to submit a medical certificate to the Labor Office with the work permit application. However, a future employer may require such document for specific professions if it is needed according to law.

Employer’s Reporting Duty

If the foreign national does not take up the post or if the employment of a work permit holder ends prematurely, the employer has a duty to notify the Labour Office about this fact within 7 working days.

Work Permit Extension

Validity of the work permit can be extended (also repeatedly) for up to 2 years.

You should apply for your work permit extension not later than 30 days before the expiration of your current work permit at locally competent Labour Office. This application form includes employer's confirmation that the applicant will continue working for them.

You can get the work permit extension only on the condition that you will work for the same employer.

If you intend to change the employer, you have to apply for a new work permit.

End of the Work Permit's Validity

Work permit becomes invalid when:
  • it expires
  • the employment of the work permit holder ends prematurely
  • the foreign national's residence permit issued by the Foreign Police Department expires
  • the residence permit of the foreign national becomes invalid for other reasons according to the Act on Residence of Foreigners (for example if the Foreign Police Department cancels the residence permit)
The Labor Office may cancel the work permit if:
  • the work permit holder breaks the law
  • the work permit holder does not take up the position, for which the Labor Office issued the work permit
