According to Article 42 of the Constitution of the Slovak Republic every citizen has the right to education while the details are stipulated in special regulations.

Compulsory school attendance starts at the beginning of the school year (2nd September) in the year the child has already reached the sixth birthday.

The primary school education in Slovakia lasts for 9 years. The primary schools are divided into two levels: First level (pre-school class through the 4th grade) and the second level (5th through the 9th grade). In some schools, the secondary level is connected with the secondary grammar school.

Slovak nationals are entitled to a free education at the primary and secondary schools. Children of the foreigners with a valid residential permit in Slovakia and children of refugees and asylum seekers are provided with the education at the primary and secondary state schools under the same conditions as Slovak nationals.

According to the Constitution citizens of the Slovak Republic are entitled to free education at primary and secondary schools and “depending on abilities of the individual and potential of the society, also in institutions of higher education”.
