How to document the purpose of residence?

When applying for temporary residence, the purpose of your residence in Slovakia may be documented by various documents.  

BUSINESS IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • When applying for residence for the purpose of business, provided that the foreigner is registered in the Commercial Register, Trade Register, Register of Legal Entities, Entrepreneurs and Public Authorities (RPO - Single Public Register), or other similar register, or registered in the Commercial Register as a person authorized to act on behalf of a company or cooperative, the purpose of residence does not need to be documented;
  • Business plan along with expected expenses related to the commencement of business (template available on the Ministry of Economy of the SR website);
  • Business plan for implementation of an innovative project - a start-up (template available on the Ministry of Economy of the SR website);
  • Document confirming the authorization to do business (e.g. memorandum of association on founding of a company signed by all founders, in which the foreigner is indicated as its executive, or record from the general assembly of an existing company during which the foreigner was appointed as its executive);
  • Other document proving business activities in Slovakia (e.g. extract from the Register of Self-employed Farmers, or license to practice medicine or law).

EMPLOYMENT IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • When applying for the single permit (i.e. temporary residence for the purpose of employment issued based on confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacancy), the purpose of residence does not need to be documented;
  • A work permit issued by the competent Labour Office according to the place of work;
  • A confirmation from the employer stating that the foreigner will perform work which does not require a work permit or a confirmation of the possibility to fill a vacancy (e.g. applicable to graduates of Slovak high schools/universities); 
  • An international treaty legally binding the Slovak Republic, stipulating that a foreign national is not required to have a work permit in order to be employed.

STUDY IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • Confirmation of the competent state administration authority (Ministry of Education of the SR) or a letter of admission to a school issued by an authorized representative of the school (e.g. director, deputy director, dean of the faculty, vice-dean);
  • Confirmation from an organization securing a program approved by the Government of the SR or a Union program based on a contract with a relevant state administration authority.

SPECIAL ACTIVITY IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • Confirmation from a school or another educational facility on the performance of a lecturing activity; 
  • Confirmation of internship containing description of the professional training, including training objective, training duration, conditions of placement and internship supervision, internship working time and legal relation between the intern and the hosting organization;
  • Confirmation from a state administration authority, or from an art agency;
  • Professional sports contract, or confirmation from a state administration authority or a sport organization;
  • Agreement with the hosting organization responsible for the volunteering service program containing a description of the volunteering service program, its duration, conditions of placement and supervision within the volunteering service, time dedicated to volunteering, confirmation of the hosting organization´s statutory body on the financial and material coverage during the volunteering service, and the extent of trainings undertaken by the foreigner,  if needed;
  • Confirmation from a state administration authority on the performance of journalistic activities, or a document on accreditation of a journalist active in the SR;
  • Confirmation from a health care facility on the provision of health care, or document on the necessity of accompanying;
  • International treaty;
  • Confirmation from a state administration authority or an organization administering programs approved by the Slovak Government or EU programs.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • Hosting agreement.

FAMILY REUNION IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • If the applicant is a spouse of a foreign national, usually it is required to submit (1) a marriage certificate, and (2) a proof of residence of one of the spouses in Slovakia;
  • If the applicant is a single minor under 18 years of age, usually it is required to submit (1) a birth certificate of the child, (2) a proof of residence of the child´s parent in Slovakia, (3) an affidavit of the child's legal representative that the child is single, and (4) written consent of the second parent of the child who was not entrusted with the child´s care and who has the right to meet the child;
  • If the applicant is a single parent of a foreign national, dependent on his care, it is required to submit (1) a birth certificate of the child, (2) proof of the child's residence, (3) a document proving that the parent is single (e.g. a death certificate of the spouse), and (4) a document proving that the parent is dependent on the child (e.g. a medical certificate).

STATUS OF A SLOVAK LIVING ABROAD IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • A Certificate of a Slovak Living Abroad.

STATUS OF A PERSON WITH ACKNOWLEDGED LONG-TERM RESIDENCE IN ANOTHER UNION MEMBER STATE IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • Document on long-term residence issued by another Member State and an employment contract or written promise of employment, or confirmation on admission for studies or vocational training from an accredited institution, or another document mentioned above proving business, special activity, research and development or family reunion.

BLUE CARD IS DOCUMENTED BY:

  • When applying for the Blue Card, the purpose of residence does not need to be documented.

Notice: The above documents must not be older than 90 days, with the exception of:

  • Birth certificates and marriage certificates
  • Confirmations of admission to study
  • Confirmations from a state administration authority or an organization administering programs approved by the Slovak Government or EU programs
  • Documents confirming the authorization to do business
  • Certificates of a Slovak Living Abroad
  • Hosting agreements 
  • International treaties
  • Documents confirming the residence purpose when it comes to temporary residence of a foreigner with acknowledged long-term residence status in another Member State

Every document must either be in Slovak language or translated to Slovak by an official translator. Public documents issued abroad must be authenticated (either by an apostille or consular superlegalization).
