Residence of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss Federation citizens (hereinafter „citizens of the EU/EEA“), who intend to reside on the territory of the Slovak Republic for a period of more than three months, is automatically regarded as permanent residence on the basis of the first permit, if:
Registration of a permanent residence
Citizens of the EU/EEA may apply for a free registration of the first permit for permanent residence (valid for 5 years). The application must be submitted on an official form and in person at the relevant Alien and Border Police Department according to the place of residence. Contact details of the Alien and Border Police can be found here. The official form of the request for the permanent residence can be found here. The application must be accompanied by a valid passport and a written proof of secured accommodation. The police authority will not accept the request for registration unless a valid passport is submitted together with the request or in case the applicant has been declared “persona non grata.” If the applicant is interested in having issued a card to confirm the permanent residence (plastic card), they need to submit 2 photographs. To confirm the submission, the police authority will issue a confirmation of the first permit registration containing the name, surname and address of the registered person and the date of issue. Obligation of the employer If the EU/EEA citizen comes to Slovakia for the purpose of employment, the employer is obliged to notify the local Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family within 7 days of the start of the employment by sending a so-called information card (see the webpage of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family) Expiration of the first permit The residence of the EU/EEA citizen on the basis of the first permit expires, in case they:
The EU/EEA citizen is also obliged to notify the police authority of his/her place of residence within 10 days since the entry to Slovakia unless the provider of accommodation (i.e. hotel) does it instead, which means that the notification is necessary in case the citizen lives with relatives or friends. It is necessary to submit a confirmation of the accommodation containing the name of the person hosting the citizen including the person’s birth number.
